Best False Lashes for Mature Eyes: A Makeup Artist’s Guide

False lashes can make your eyes look beautifully defined, but choosing the right pair becomes even more important as we get older.

As a professional makeup artist, I’ve worked with women of all ages and eye shapes. One of the biggest mistakes I see is choosing lashes that are simply too long, too dense or too rigid for the eye.

The right lashes should enhance your eyes without taking over your makeup. Here is what I recommend looking for when choosing the best false lashes for mature eyes.

Choose a lightweight, flexible lash band

Comfort should always come first.

A thick or stiff lash band can feel uncomfortable and may be more difficult to position, particularly if the skin around the eyelid has become softer.

A lightweight, flexible band will sit more comfortably against your natural lash line and move more easily with your eyes. It is also much easier to apply, especially if you are new to wearing false lashes.

Look at the length, not just the volume

Very long lashes can cast a shadow over the eyes and hide the makeup you have carefully applied.

For mature eyes, I often recommend choosing a shorter style with soft, separated strands. This creates definition while still allowing the eyes to remain open and visible.

You can still wear a fuller lash for an evening look. The secret is choosing a style with shape and softness rather than one solid line of lashes.

Try a half or three-quarter lash

If you struggle with full strip lashes, a half or three-quarter lash can be a brilliant alternative.

These styles sit on the outer section of the lash line, so they are quicker to apply and often feel more comfortable. They also add definition to the outer corners without covering the entire eye.

Half lashes are particularly useful for hooded, smaller or mature eyes because you do not need to worry about the inner corner becoming uncomfortable or coming away.

Choose a shape that suits your eyes

There is no single lash style that works for everyone.

If your eyes naturally turn down slightly at the outer corners, avoid lashes that become extremely long at the very end. Instead, choose a softly graduated or rounded shape that gives the eyes definition without pulling them down.

For hooded eyes, look for lashes that are shorter through the centre and softly textured. This prevents the lashes from touching the brow bone or hiding your eyeshadow.

If you wear glasses, shorter lashes are usually the most comfortable because they are less likely to brush against the lenses.

My application tips for mature eyes

Before applying your lashes, gently curl your natural lashes and add a light coat of mascara. This gives the false lash something to sit against.

Always measure the lash before adding adhesive. If it is too long, trim a small amount from the outer edge.

Apply a thin layer of Glam Grip Lash Adhesive and allow it to become tacky before placing the lash. If the adhesive is still very wet, the lash will slide around and become much harder to control.

Look slightly down into a mirror rather than closing your eye completely. This gives you a clearer view of your lash line and makes positioning much easier.

Wearing false lashes is not about disguising your eyes or trying to look younger. It is about adding definition, finishing your makeup and helping you feel like the best version of yourself.
