How To Apply False Lashes For Beginners: A Makeup Artist's Guide.
If you’ve ever tried applying false lashes and ended up with one corner sticking up, you’re certainly not alone. Getting the fit and glue right makes such a difference.
As a professional makeup artist and founder of Sally Rowe Beauty, here’s how I would guide you through your first application.
Start with a lash you feel comfortable wearing
You don’t need to start with your most dramatic pair. Choose a style that suits the makeup you normally wear.
For a soft, natural finish, the Mia ¾ lash is a lovely starting point. Its shorter band leaves the inner corner free, giving you less lash band to position.
Prefer a fuller, fluffy finish? Take a look at the Kimberly lash.
If you’re still deciding, explore The Journal’s guides to choosing false lashes for more help.
1. Gather everything before you start
Have your lashes, strip lash adhesive, a mirror, clean lash applicator or tweezers, and small scissors ready.
Good lighting helps. Place your mirror slightly below eye level so you can look down into it while keeping your eye gently open.
2. Check the fit before applying glue
Rest the lash against your upper lash line without adhesive. The band should sit comfortably without poking the inner corner or extending beyond the outer edge.
If a full strip is too long, remove it and trim a little from the outer end. Check again before cutting more. Always trim away from your face.
A ¾ lash sits further along the lash line, so don’t try to stretch it across the whole eye.
3. Apply a thin layer of lash glue
Use a thin, even layer of strip lash adhesive along the band. You can explore Glam Grip lash adhesive to complete your lash routine.
Follow your adhesive’s instructions and allow it to become tacky before positioning the lash. Applying it while the glue is too wet can make the band slide around.
4. Position the centre first
Looking down into your mirror, place the centre of the band just above your natural upper lashes, on the skin rather than the waterline.
Once the centre is positioned, gently secure the outer and inner ends. Keep tools away from the eye itself and give the adhesive time to set.
5. Check both corners
Look straight ahead and check that the band feels comfortable and both ends are secure.
If a corner keeps coming away, check the fit and whether you allowed enough time for the glue to become tacky. More glue isn’t always the answer.
Watch an application before you practise
