How to Choose the Right False Lashes for Your Eye Shape
Choosing the right false lashes is not just about finding a style you love. The shape, length and placement of the lash can completely change how your eyes look.
As a professional makeup artist, I always look at the eye shape first. The right lash can make your eyes appear more open, elongated and beautifully defined, while still feeling comfortable and looking like you.
Here is my simple guide to choosing the most flattering lashes for your eye shape.
HOODED EYES
If you have hooded eyes, choose lashes that create definition without overwhelming the eyelid.
Styles that are slightly longer through the centre can help the eyes appear more open. A lightweight, wispy lash is usually the most flattering because it adds impact while allowing your eye makeup to remain visible.
Avoid styles that are extremely dense across the entire lash band, as they can cover too much of the eyelid.
ALMOND EYES
Almond eyes suit almost every lash shape, so you have plenty of freedom to experiment.
A softly graduated lash, which becomes longer towards the outer corner, will enhance the natural shape of the eye and create an elegant, elongated finish.
For everyday makeup, choose something soft and wispy. For evenings or special occasions, you can add more length and definition.
ROUND EYES
For round eyes, a lash that becomes longer towards the outer corner can help create a more elongated shape.
Three-quarter lashes and softly flared styles work beautifully because they draw attention outwards. Try to avoid lashes with too much length directly in the centre if you do not want the eyes to appear even rounder.
DOWNTURNED EYES
If the outer corners of your eyes naturally turn downwards, look for lightweight lashes with a gentle flare at the outer edge.
The lash should add soft definition without placing too much weight on the outer corner. Correct placement is also important. Positioning the outer edge very slightly above your natural lash line can help create a more flattering finish.
DEEP-SET EYES
Deep-set eyes can usually carry a little more length because the eyes sit further back beneath the brow bone.
A wispy lash with visible separation will bring the eyes forward and add definition without hiding your eye makeup. Look for flexible, lightweight bands that sit comfortably along the lash line.
MONOLID EYES
For monolid eyes, choose lashes with a natural curl and varied lengths.
Wispy, layered styles can add beautiful dimension and help open the eyes. A flexible lash band is particularly important, as it will be easier to position and more comfortable to wear.
WHAT IF YOU ARE STILL UNSURE?
If you are new to false lashes, begin with a lightweight natural style or a three-quarter lash. They are easy to apply, comfortable to wear and give the eyes definition without feeling too much.
The Emma Lash is a lovely choice when you want a natural finish with a little extra oomph. Mia is a beautiful three-quarter style for soft definition, while Elizabeth creates an elegant finish that works particularly well for bridal and special-occasion makeup.
Remember, these are helpful guidelines rather than strict rules. Makeup should still feel personal to you. The best lash is the one that makes you feel polished, confident and completely yourself.
